D. Berry Baxter

Oldham County Attorney

D. Berry Baxter was elected to serve as the Oldham County Attorney in 2022 after a long career in private practice and public service to the Commonwealth. He is the managing partner of Berry, Floyd & Baxter, PSC, a law firm located in La Grange, Kentucky. With over 35 years of experience in the legal profession, Berry has established himself as a skilled litigator and accomplished attorney.

Berry began his career as an associate attorney at Berry & Floyd, PSC in New Castle and Carrollton, Kentucky, where he practiced general law with a focus on civil litigation, lender’s rights, and real property issues, including real estate closings. He quickly rose to the position of partner and managed the firm's practice.

In 1998, Berry established his own law firm, the Baxter Law Office, in LaGrange, Kentucky. As a sole practitioner, he continued to practice general law with a focus on civil and criminal litigation, property issues, including zoning and land use issues, lender’s rights, and real property issues, including real estate closings.

In 2003, Berry joined forces with his former law firm and became the managing partner of Berry, Floyd & Baxter, PSC, where he continues to engage in the general practice of law. He has successfully represented clients in civil litigation, lender’s rights and real property issues, including real estate closings, land use, and other property use matters, and domestic relations practice. He has also acted as general counsel to corporate clients.

In addition to his private practice, Berry has also served as an Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney in the 12th Judicial Circuit of Kentucky since 2003. In this role, he has prosecuted felony crimes and participated in multiple trials involving charges of murder, rape, sodomy, assault, sexual abuse, theft, and related charges. He was promoted to First Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney in 2013. During his tenure with that office, he attended hundreds of sessions of the grand juries in the three counties that make up the jurisdiction.

Berry received his Bachelor of Arts degrees in both Political Science and History from Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts in 1985. He earned his Juris Doctorate from the University of Kentucky College of Law in Lexington, Kentucky in 1988. Upon graduation, he moved to Oldham County to begin his career. He is married to Courtney Tigue Baxter and they have two children.
